Now if only it was RWD and brown. Then it would be perfect

This is one of many cars I would kill for - IF it was RWD.

Also over across the great ocean it costs the same as the regular ST. So it’s more of a pick your poison type deal.

Peugeot offers the 308 GT SW that you can have either with the THP 205hp petrol engine, or with an HDI engine with 180hp. The HDI is only available with their new semi-automatic gearbox though. The petrol on the other hand is only available with the manual.

Kinja'd!!!

And Renault had a limited run of the Mégane Estate in GT trim that came with chassis-bits from the RS, as well as a 220hp four-banger. And I think they made a GT-line trim which was available with a diesel.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, Volvo offers the V60 with a 190hp diesel that comes with a 6-speed manual or their 8-speed geartronic gearbox. And they also have the D5, only available with the 8-speed automatic, but 225hp. And you can get both in R-Line trim.

VW has the Golf Sportwagen GTD. That means bits and bobs from the GTI, but a 184hp TDI engine. 6-speed manual or DSG.

Kinja'd!!!

And seat has the Golf’s cousin with the Leon ST FR, either in petrol or diesel.

And I’ll have none of it, largely because none of these cars will ever step on Philippine soil. Darn.

Then again, how many americans would be willing to pay $1,000 more (which would amount to about $26,500) to have 70 less hp, barely more torque, and a car that’s slower than an FR-S or a Miata, both of which are often called out for their lack of performance.

With american gas & diesel prices, such a car makes no sense, unless you’re driving 50 000 miles a year or so.

Not sure what countries you looked at? It’s 750€ more expensive in Belgium and 1,500€ more expensive in France?

For the life of me I can’t understand why anyone would want a car with less horsepower and slower performance at an increased cost.

If you didn’t live in the US, it would be. Some places gas can cost more than triple what it is us north America. It becomes a huge cost to run the car.

What’s the comparative cost of gas vs. diesel in places where they don’t subsidize big SUVs?

Since you asked about possible competition ... what about the Skoda Octavia (v)RS TDI?

Not available for the U.S. market either, this Octavia also comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cyl. Diesel with an identical 184 PS. The Octavia RS normaly rocky a 2.0T gasoline engine with a few more horses, so this is very much the same idea Ford pursued with the Focus: build on an existing enthusiast model and simply put in another engine while the rest stays largely the same.

Kinja'd!!!

Numbers!

4-cylinder Diesel, 1,986 cm³

135 KW / 184 PS

380 Nm @ 1,750 rpm

6-speed DSG ‘box (possibly 6MT, too)

228 kph top speed

1,502 kg curb weight

Kinja'd!!!

The RS TDI might just be the most specific competitor to the Focus in the European market. Slots below the faster Golf wagons (still getting used to the idea that there’s a Golf R Variant now).

One thing, though: the claimed 0-60 (or rather 0-100kph) time seems awfully slow with 8.3s ... though that might just be down to the transmission being extra-careful.

Kinja'd!!!

Imagery nicked from the internet .

I ran off to grab a coffee and came back to find that I can no longer edit the post.

No hiding typos today, I guess. :-/

Sorry btw for automatically assuming you were in the U.S. market ... that’s usually the case when people rant about the lack of wagons.

I have - a 328d. Might as well have said Caterpillar on the side of it. Rattled at stop lights, ran out of pep after 4k rpm, etc. But yes, for fuel mileage figures it was simply astounding.

I guess gasoline is what you want then. Maybe try a pickup like the Ram 2500 with a 6.7 diesel. Those have a lot of power.

Only 25 more in the ST than the gas version, with a loss of 70 horsepower.

Nah.
